CRFS Mission Statement

Through a partnership between Utah Valley University and Capitol Reef National Park, the Capitol Reef Field Station promotes interdisciplinary engaged learning, field-based scientific research, and environmental ethics through exploration, appreciation, and conservation of the Colorado Plateau ecosystem. 

Implementation Strategies

1. CRFS develops, promotes, and supports college level educational activities, such as multidisciplinary short courses and programs, relevant field trips and workshops.
2. CRFS integrates research with educational activities to further understand historical and current processes shaping Colorado Plateau ecosystems within and surrounding Capitol Reef National Park.
3. CRFS supports research activities that advance National Park Service priorities, including geological, meteorological, biological and other related studies.
4. CRFS welcomes and supports programs that encourage environmental ethics, engaged learning, stewardship, service, and partnerships with the Park Service.

CRFS Value Statement

CRFS nurtures stewardship of our environment—of walking in nature with care, understanding, and respect—including:

1. Direct, experiential learning and close connectivity with natural surroundings.
2. Leave-no-trace ethics and appreciation for the intrinsic worth of all species—as well as sensitivity to our high potential for altering ecosystems.
3. Interdisciplinary learning between arts and sciences.
4. Collaboration between National Park Service scientists and local, regional, and national research institutions.
